Frank Lloyd Wright used interlocking log beams to help stabilize the foundation of the hotel and prevent collapse in earthquakes. Building toys or drumsticks?ĭid you know that Lincoln Logs were invented in 1916 by John Lloyd Wright, the son of famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright? He was inspired by his father’s foundation design of the Imperial Hotel in Japan. For this reason, I agree with the manufacturer’s recommendation that this toy is for kids age 3+. She bangs them together, on the floor, or sometimes on other people (this can be painful and is not recommended!). My daughter also occasionally uses the logs as drumsticks. She plays with them as often as my son, sometimes trying to build independently, and if she becomes stuck or frustrated while building, she asks for my help. My almost three year old daughter also loves the Lincoln Logs. Ever since we received the Lincoln Logs, they have become one of his go-to favorite toys to play with in our game room. He has built cabins and houses for his animals, and is always building something creative and new. My five year old son is great at building independently with the Lincoln Logs.

Lincoln logs how to#
Our Lincoln Log set comes with an instruction booklet to teach you how to build a few structures, but my kids prefer to use their imaginations to build cabins, tree houses, animal barns, zoos, and more! (I’ve linked to our same set on on Amazon throughout this post) Princesses love to play with Lincoln Logs too! Lincoln Logs also come with logs that are flat on one side to use for roofs, and triangular shaped pieces to make a pitched roof shape.
Lincoln logs windows#
The logs come in varying sizes, allowing you to create doors and windows by using the smaller blocks and leaving blank spaces where a window or door would go. The logs have square notches to allow them to interlock securely in right angles to build square and rectangular building structures.

They teach children about shapes, building, design, construction…the list goes on and on. I was thrilled for my kids to receive this great gift because Lincoln Logs are an awesome STEAM toy. My father-in-law gave my kids a set of Lincoln Logs this summer. The toy it inspired, however, continues to thrive 100 years after its creation.Note: This post contains affiliate links. In spite of withstanding earthquakes and intense bombing during World War II, the Imperial Hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright finally fell to the wrecking ball in 1968. Since 1991, the rights to produce Lincoln Logs have been licensed by K’NEX, which announced in 2014 that the stackable wooden construction sets would again be manufactured in the United States after years of being produced in China. The copyright for Lincoln Logs eventually passed to toy companies Milton Bradley and Hasbro. John Lloyd Wright sold his company to Playskool in 1943 for only $800. Wright Blocks, however, proved too intricate and lacked the same appeal as Lincoln Logs. John Lloyd Wright attempted to build on the success of Lincoln Logs in the 1930s with Wright Blocks, a toy construction set with interlocking wooden shapes that allowed budding architects to build castles or other complex designs. Over 100 million sets have been sold worldwide, and Lincoln Logs were inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 1999. Some scholars also believe John Lloyd Wright as a child possibly played with the Log Cabin Playhouse, a similar wooden construction set that had been developed by toy company Ellis, Britton & Eaton in the 1860s.Ī century after their creation, low-tech Lincoln Logs continue to be popular in a high-tech world. Lincoln Logs followed the trail blazed by Tinkertoys and Erector Sets, which had been introduced a few years earlier. The toy’s packaging featured a simple drawing of a log cabin, a small portrait of Lincoln and the slogan “Interesting playthings typifying the spirit of America.” Capitalizing on both a nostalgia for the frontier at a time when the United States was becoming increasingly urbanized and a wave of patriotism in the wake of World War I, Lincoln Logs became an instant success. The toy came with instructions to build not only Abraham Lincoln’s Kentucky boyhood home, but a famous log structure from the pages of American literature, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. In 1918, John Lloyd Wright began to market his creation through his own firm, the Red Square Toy Company, and two years later he received a patent for his “toy-cabin construction.” He bestowed upon his creation an alliterative name that also evoked an American icon-Lincoln Logs.
